For one year in 1989 ban on student was lifted after Benazir Bhutto got in power.  I was in first year and ran for joint secretary. I was President of Peoples Student Federation (PSF). We lost as Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) swept elections. It was fun but later during 4 years of Engineering I stayed away from student politics.

Even then I was in favor of student politics but was against then role of national parties PMLN, PTI, PPP, MQM, ANP, JI etc in student politics. In developed countries college unions aren’t tied to main stream parties, don’t get funding from there but in developing world they are tied.

I see Jibran Nasir along with many student leaders are trying to lift this ban. I am of course against ban but would to hear from fellow bloggers. What’s their take on question that I always had confusion. Should we keep student politics separate from main stream? Leaders like Altaf Hussain, Sheikh Rashid are product of student unions. These student unions tied to main stream parties played significant role in anti-Brit political struggle. So there are pros of this connection when it comes to challenging status quo. But in my humble opinion cons outweighs pros and that’s why Govt keep them banned all the time.

Please share your views on pros and cons and what’s the best path forward.

I was a member of National Union of Students, UK on two separate occasions in 2002-03 and then from 2005-07 and have seen the merits of Student Unions in developed world when they are not patronized by the main stream political parties and for that matter any Establishment of a state.

I’ve also seen the ugly face of Student Unions in my home town and then in Punjab University Lahore campuses as well—in few of my visits to Lahore in 1990’s—and have known about their true evil ambitions to serve the interests of their manipulating and destructive handlers.

Like many areas, Student Unions in educational institutes in Pakistan desperately require an unambiguous and strict legislation from the parliament to criminalize the political influence on any Student entities in those institutions before demanding the lifting of their bans from the incumbent government in this volatile state.

It seems like universities in Pakistan are dominated by IJT even today. It’s important to counter their propaganda and provide a platform to opposing views. Its refreshing to see leftist voices amongst students. This is needed to avoid incidents like Mashal Khan from happening.

I don’t understand if there is a ban on unions than how is IJT still so active in universities?

Is student union a need or a want and specially in a country like Pakistan where status and power trumps the principle of fairness, equality and safeguard of human rights.

Saying so, representing fellow students does help develop skills like understanding and  solving problems, taking decisions, evaluating situation and carrying our analysis, taking risks and  developing and exercising leadership skills etc.

I am not in favour of student unions becoming part of or getting influenced by political parties.

The question here is not pros and cons of student unions but pros and cons of student unions that are influenced by political parties.  Political parties have vested interest in student unions, it gives them army of workers but they are still not able to lift ban. I don’t know where is that decision made. In India there is no ban on student unions and political parties influence them like in Pakistan. In Hong Kong I don’t know if student unions are tied to political parties or not but they are offering biggest resistance.

In developed world universities are quite independent even state schools. If student is expelled on disciplinary ground politicians will be very reluctant to throw their weight behind as it can ruin their political career. The society as a whole has offered resistance to political parties meddling in affairs of university. We couldn’t do it so we took a short cut ban unions.
