Watched SMQ’s 11 min interview where he was accused of anti Semitic slur

I think journalist is right, his deep pocket and connection remark was clearly anti Semitic. He thought he is on ARY or in his drawing room.  We say these sorts of things casually, reminds me of Sarfaraz’s Kalay Ki Ma casual remark that landed him in trouble and schooling.

SMQ also needs to be schooled. I can’t say this casually to my colleagues forget being on CNN

Do you know the definition of Antisemitism?

I suggest you read it up first and then assess how the remarks “Deep pockets” and “controlling the Media” can be interpreted as Anti-Semitic?

And Sirazi, if “I can’t say this casually to my colleagues” DO NOT live in a country where “Freedom pf expression” is used as a reason for utterances and drawings against Islam and “Deep Pockets” and “Controlling Media” are perceived to be anti-Semitic. Self-respect is more valuable than few Dollars.

My initial reaction after I saw the interview couple of days ago was that Shah sahib’s comment was not anti semitic. He only shared his opinion, which may or may not be a fact, about Israel.

I then started looking for a definition of Anti Semitism and I stumbled upon a definition, and if that definition is generally accepted that one may argue that Shah sahib’s comment could fall under the definition of anti semitism.

“Manifestations might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity. However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic. Antisemitism frequently charges Jews with conspiring to harm humanity, and it is often used to blame Jews for “why things go wrong.” It is expressed in speech, writing, visual forms and action, and employs sinister stereotypes and negative character traits”

One may argue with the definition and in my opinion, if this definition is adopted, similar definitions should be developed and applied towards Muslims, Arabs, Pakistanis etc.

Apart from the row over the definition, in my humble opinion, Shah sahib’s overall approach and stance seemed not worthy of a educated, polished, seasoned politician who in his opinion was  representing a community of over billion people and a country of over 220 million. A comment like “deep pockets” without any shroud of evidence is not suited to a man and position of this stature, in my humble opinion.

He had the opportunity and he lost it by getting involved in something which was not required.

1. I did watch it twice before and once again after you requested me.
2. As I stated in my first post on this topic, my first reaction was that there is nothing antisemitic in Shah sahib’s comment.
3. I then tried to see if there is a definition that can be used to gauge the statement. For me without a definition, it becomes difficult to gauge if the comment was or was not antisemitic.
4. Based on the definition which I posted and the examples provided and again, only based on the definition, it does fall under the antisemitic definition.
5. I then mentioned in my post that if such definitions will be used to determine what is antisemitic or not, same definitions should also be created for Muslim, Arab and Pakistanis.
6. Shah sahib’s sarcastic laugh on the question was not required and perhaps infuriated the anchor. While the anchor should not get biased based on the reaction of the interviewee, Shah sahib is the expert on foreign affairs, diplomacy and how to tackle difficult questions and I don’t think he did. This is my opinion and you and others may have a totally different and perhaps correct opinion.
7. Shah sahib did mention “people” rather than state of Israel on further clarification. If he would have left at state of Israel, it may not have fallen under the definition.
8. Shah sahib did accuse media of being biased and on the payroll of the people.

To me Shah’s sahib’s comment is not harmful but his tone, his accusation and the definition of antisemitic all make it difficult to defend.

In the end, what did Shah sahib achieved. Maybe for the domestic audience, he may have been the victor in this verbal spat, but he didn’t do a good service to the cause, he apparently was championing, in my personal uneducated and on the surface opinion.

By the way, I came across another clip where Shah sahib was being interviewed by a Pakistani anchor Jared Ch. sahib and Shah sahib lost all his calm in that interview. I am surprised that he did not react the same way to a foreign anchor.

You provided a definition and I am returning the compliment by providing a definition of another phrase found very offensive by some

His use of Deep Pockets has been interpreted as Anti-Semitic.

Oxford Languages defines Deep Pockets as

” possession of abundant financial resources.”

I, with a simple and unbiased mind do not see anything Anti-Semitic or Anti-Muslim or Anti Hindu it this.

It is the world know fact that Jewish community is a  rich community. It has created and accumulated wealth by their sheer hard work over a number of years. Why, to say that they have abundant financial resources is perceived as anti-Semitic?

It is also a world known fact that financially strong community will also be politically strong and therefore becomes influential. And the people who are influential are listened to by the other people and get jobs done for their community which will otherwise be the subject to red-tape. They also raise lot of funds for charitable causes.

Now if Jewish community is considered to be influential because of their financial strength, what is wrong with that and why is perceived to be Anti-Semitic?

Just because SMQ has not performed to your satisfaction (Even his laughter was sarcastic!) it does not mean that he is Anti-Semitic. I have forgotten now the number of times he said in his interview (I am not anti-Semitic). Does it count?

And Finally JMP Sahib we live in a world where we should live and let live, it should not be I live here and you go and live somewhere else!

SMQ is a loser, he is not a career diplomat. He is a politician and doesn’t understand as FM he can land in trouble with such comments from the hip. He said Israel has deep pockets and control the narrative on media but with emerging social media and citizen journalism things are changing and other side views are also being heard.

This is clearly anti Semitic and it’s same kind of venom that brought Holocaust. If western democracies stand with Israel it’s not under any financial pressure as laymen perceive in Islamic world. Many countries including India respect Israel for being tolerant democracy, educated and technically advanced people with very unique security concerns. Israel’s GDP is half of Saudis, with oil at the heart of globe’s economy Muslims have some serious misperception about Israel’s influence and there lack of.

The left in USA urged administration to negotiate cease fire. Jews in America vote for Democrats as a block, 75% votes for Dems. I have had frank conversations with whites here, no one ever said what SMQ said Jews control narrative.

Same way in USA people are very careful about calling out Muslims as terrorists or racially going after one or the other race. Trump in his 4 years tried to make it normal but it’s not. People are sensitive about racial, ethnic and religious sensitivities especially in work environment or in public domain like TV. SMQ casually said what we say casually say in Pakistan and ME where there is no concept of political correctness. People in Pakistan are splaying his anti Semitic views as we are anti Semitic people in general. Bad mouthing Jews, Hindus, other races is business as usual in our society.

it’s a similar situation when Sarfaraz said Kalay ki ma Masaryk pay duwa maang rahi hai. Many in Pakistan didn’t even understand what was wrong in Sarfaraz’s casual comment. They don’t understand in developed world tags like nigger or blackie can land you in foible. Few years back George Allen lost his Senate bid that effectively ended his political career when he called an Indian American, who was shooting his campaign events from a permissible distance, Makaka.

We don’t see people in queues back home. Same ignorant mindset doesn’t understand the concept of political correctness. For us the only correctness is around spiritual leaders of the majority faith, no other red lines.

شیرازی جی – آپ کتنا سوتے ہو ؟ یہ انٹرویو تین چار دن پہلے سی این این پر نشر ہوا تھا ، میزبان کا شاہ محمود کے جواب میں اسے اینٹی سمیٹک کہنا اسے پریشر میں لینا تھا ، لیکن اس کے بعد شاہ صاحب نے کچھ جذباتی پن کا مظاہرہ کر دیا

Thanks. I have failed to communicate my view point due to my poor communication skills so repeating again what I said, will not be helpful.

As far as my opinion on performance or laughter of Shah sahib’s is concerned, I apologize if I held him to a high standard of diplomacy and managing tough / hostile questions. I though never labelled Shah sahib Antiemetic nor equated his performance or laughter to establish that he is Antisemitic. I poorly attempted to communicate that if a definition is the base to label a comment antisemitic or not, the comment is antisemitic. If the definition is wrong, which in my opinion is, the effort should be on changing the definition.
